Carolin Schnurrer’s multidisciplinary practice incorporates sound, installation, workshops, performances, moving image and DJ sets to build transformative sensory experiences informed by speculative fiction, deep listening and somatic psychology. Exploring the function of rhythm and ritual, at the core of her practice is the investigation of entangled embodiment: she is interested in a level of care that transcends the limitations imposed by borders, culture, language, and other systems of exclusion. As part of one of her recent artistic projects, she has created her own electronic instruments that incorporate human skin into her music-making process and provide a platform for the audience to actively shape and manipulate the sounds she produces in real-time by engaging in tactile interactions with one another. This allows her not only to investigate the potential of healing through the powers of human touch and sound, but also challenge traditional notions of music creation and club experiences.
Under her alias gakko verbindet sie synthetische und sensorische Klanglandschaften und führt das Publikum auf immersive Soundodysseen. Im Rahmen ihrer Zusammenarbeit mit Musiker*innen, Künstler*innen, Autor*innen und Tänzer*innen wie KLEIN, AUDINT (Kode9, Eleni Ikon, Toby Heyes), Julie Cunningham und Haroon Mirza ist sie u.a. bei Tate Lates, Hyperdub’s Night Ø in den Corsica Studios, Oram Awards sowie den Serpentine Park Nights in London, bei intonal in Malmö, ACCA in Melbourne, 925 in Colombo, MIRA Festival in Barcelona und bei KWIA Berlin aufgetreten.
During her three-week residency at soft power Schnurrer delves into the theme of bodily fragility, drawing from her personal experience with chronic fatigue, immune dysfunction, and cognitive challenges. How does our society’s understanding of vulnerability shape the way we interact with each other and the world around us? How do these vulnerabilities intersect with power structures, both within ecosystems and communities, particularly in a world where our nervous systems are increasingly hijacked by external forces?
The super soft residency is a format, in which soft power regularly welcomes artists, musicians or performers to take over our space for a period of time to pursue, rehearse, explore their current research, projects and ideas.
