\u201cThere is nothing more invisible than a monument\u201d, likely one of the most famous quotes about monuments, was stated first by writer and philosopher Robert Musil. Plural Perspectives<\/em> acts as a collective artistic proposal to actively seek out and develop new conversations with monuments, buildings or institutions in the city of Berlin, to reflect on these \u2013 almost ordinary \u2013 constructs that permeate daily life and carry their historical layers of meaning, oftentimes unquestioned and overlooked, into the present as they sediment fixed notions of identity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since modern times and due to some key events that took place in this city, such as the Berlin Conference in 1884, Berlin holds a place of special responsibility in the unfolding of the global colonial project. Even though many of the buildings that took a central role in those evolving global dynamics were destroyed during the Second World War, many others still stand. Using the location as a point of relation, Plural Perspectives<\/em> invites different artistic positions to engage \u2013 each through their own research \u2013 with specific points in the city through the creation of newly commissioned works. In connection to the site, the works aim to unveil the historic layers it entails, setting the tone for yet another sediment of meaning and thus disputing the versions of history endorsed by the state \u2013 in the case of public monuments, streets or public institutions \u2013, or capitalism \u2013 in the case of a city construct that lasted because of its commercial success. The resulting plural perspectives each depart from the will to reflect globally and locally, considering that many of the local happenings these sites refer to, in their history or meaning, had transnational effects or were caused by transnational dynamics. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a time of crisis, in which nostalgic feeling is exploited by fascist groups, the artistic positions each and in dialogue with each other critically engage with a globalised world that in the face of political polarisation still, and again, praises nationalism and white supremacist principles of identity. As Antonio Gramsci reflected on times that see fascism on the rise, \u201cthe old world is dying and the new world struggles to be born. Now is the time of monsters.\u201d Plural Perspectives<\/em> tackles the present time of monsters and disputes consecrated versions of history in order to allow for new futures to come to fruition. The conversations led by the artists each propose a specific tone and point of reflection in relation to the past. They possess different positionalities in relation to the constructs they aim to connect with \u2013 fostering new discussions and ways of seeing that transgress institutionalised discourse and history \u2013 and creating alliances between anti-fascist points of views, proletarian fight and identity politics as a bet on how to critically engage with the world around us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The exhibition project Plural Perspectives<\/i> aims to reveal contemporary dynamics and a diversity of perspectives on physical sites that carry a symbolic meaning in the city of Berlin. Curated by Dereck Marou\u00e7o Sant'Anna da Silva, the project connects public space with artistic practices that develop new conversations with monuments, buildings or institutions to reflect and review versions of history endorsed by the state and capital. Five artistic positions were invited to create works in relation to five sites in the city: Alice Creischer (Mall of Berlin), Aykan Safo\u011flu (Siegess\u00e4ule), Edgar Calel (Sarotti Factory), Jota Momba\u00e7a (Haus der Berliner Konferenz), and Mukenge\/Schellhammer (Humboldt Forum). In June 2023, the new commissions were presented at soft power<\/i> \u2013 itself located at one of the sites, the former Sarotti factory in Tempelhof \u2013 exhibiting some of the relations that arose from the dialogue between the artworks and the places they respond to. Simultaneously, each work took a presence on the streets through posters in the direct vicinity of the respective site, mapped out on an interactive website. Goodbye, Sarotti<\/em> suggeriert einen Abschied, markiert aber zugleich einen Neubeginn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Im Oktober 2020 sind \u00fcber 40 Berliner K\u00fcnstler*innen und Kulturschaffende in die ehemalige Sarottifabrik in Berlin-Tempelhof eingezogen. Hier schuf die Firma Sarotti 1918 eines der noch heute bekanntesten deutschen Markenzeichen: Eine rassistische Darstellung einer Schwarzen Person, entworfen im Sinne der Werbestrategien der ausgehenden Kolonialzeit. Der Bekanntheitsgrad des Sarotti-Logos lag in Deutschland im Jahr 2000 bei 95 Prozent. Seit 2004 als \u201eMagier der Sinne\u201c getarnt, spuken dieses und andere rassistische, stereotype und exotisierende Bilder der Kolonialzeit weiterhin durch unseren materiellen Alltag, durch Supermarktg\u00e4nge, Warenh\u00e4user und durch dieses Fabrikgeb\u00e4ude in der Teilestra\u00dfe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wie gehen wir damit um, dass die denkmalgesch\u00fctzte Fabrik\u2009\u2013\u2009ein neuer Berliner Ort der k\u00fcnstlerischen Produktion, den wir mitgestalten wollen\u2009\u2013 \u201eSarotti\u201c in ihrem Namen tr\u00e4gt? Wie k\u00f6nnen wir die allgegenw\u00e4rtigen Kontinuit\u00e4ten kolonialer Strukturen sichtbar machen, im Stadtteil verorten und langfristig mit einer breiten \u00d6ffentlichkeit diskutieren?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Als architektonische Repr\u00e4sentation von Macht und einem kolonialen und neokolonialen Selbstverst\u00e4ndnis wird die ehemalige Sarottifabrik zum Ort dieser arch\u00e4ologischen Geisterbefragung. In Austausch mit Berlin Postkolonial e. V., Dekoloniale \u2013 Erinnerungskultur in der Stadt sowie mit K\u00fcnstler*innen des Hauses will soft power<\/em> nicht nur die Vergangenheit dieses Geb\u00e4udes anerkennen und aufarbeiten, sondern vielmehr dessen Zukunft aktiv mitgestalten. Die ersten k\u00fcnstlerischen Ergebnisse dieser gemeinsamen Auseinandersetzung wurden am 3.
