\u201cThe law is a promise that only keeps itself in the form of a threat.\u201d (Anne Boyer)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Based on a fictional legal system and its foundational penal code, Corpus Iuris Artis<\/em><\/strong> unfolds as an exhibition and performance cycle, in which Selin Davasse questions, codifies, institutionalizes and puts on trial the art world\u2019s representational claims and ethical posturing. This Corpus<\/em> \u2013 a body of work, revolving around a body of law, enacted by a body in space \u2013 promises a spectacle of justice and threatens to expose hypocrisies and contradictions. In a playful attempt at imagining legal norms, instruments and procedures, Davasse speculates on how these tools and processes would be implemented in common art world scenarios. As performer and representative, the artist adopts the roles of the various parties involved: she prosecutes and is prosecuted; testifies and is testified about; judges and is judged. 
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Selin Davasse\u2019s exhibition Corpus Iuris Artis: II. The Hearing <\/em><\/strong>f\u00fchrt uns an den fiktiven \u201eGerichtshof f\u00fcr ethische Abrechnung in der Kunst\u201c \u2013 eine provisorisch errichtete Theaterb\u00fchne f\u00fcr eine Anh\u00f6rung, Kulisse f\u00fcr ein Spektakel. In Anspielung auf den zutiefst performativen Charakter des Rechts und die Fragilit\u00e4t von Rechtssystemen spielt sich dieses Gerichtsdrama in einem Kartenhaus ab, das jeden Moment in sich zusammenfallen k\u00f6nnte. Anhand von Gerichtsvideos und -protokollen werden Delikte wie  \u201eBetr\u00fcgerisches und verwerfliches Opferverhalten\u201c, \u201eVors\u00e4tzliche Verschleierung von Klassenprivilegien im Rahmen von Opferverhalten\u201c oder \u201eVerschw\u00f6rung zum performativen Allyship\u201c verhandelt. Hinter den Kulissen erleben wir in einem intimen und doch distanzierten Videoportr\u00e4t die inneren Monologe, pr\u00e4genden Erinnerungen, widerspr\u00fcchlichen Glaubenssysteme, Pr\u00fcfungen und Leiden einer Staatsanw\u00e4ltin. Beauftragt mit der Einhaltung des \u201eCodex Iuris Artis \u2013 Statuten f\u00fcr spekulative und situative Ethik in der Kunstwelt\u201d, besteht ihre Aufgabe nicht nur darin, ethische Doktrinen und berufliche Richtlinien durchzusetzen, sondern diese in all ihren Widerspr\u00fcchen zu verk\u00f6rpern. Zugleich Autorit\u00e4tsfigur, S\u00fcndenbock und Opferlamm, wird die Staatsanw\u00e4ltin zum Symbol f\u00fcr die disziplin\u00e4ren Fantasien und Misserfolge der Kunstwelt. Sie ist eine Frau, die Regeln in eine Leere spricht, die nicht zuh\u00f6rt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Conceived as a three-act project, the consecutive steps of this imagined legal process are played out: While evidence about alleged offenses was gathered in Corpus Iuris Artis I: The Deposition<\/a><\/em> <\/em> (curated by soft power <\/em>at Mouches Volantes, Cologne, 28.6.\u20139.8.2025) and a trial is staged in Corpus Iuris Artis: II. The Hearing<\/em><\/a> <\/em> \u2013 the first time performance artist Davasse presents her work in the framework of a solo exhibition, featuring new video works commissioned by soft power<\/em> \u2013 the final performance Corpus Iuris Artis: III. The Appeal<\/em><\/a> takes place in a courtroom of a Berlin district court (commissioned by Pickle Bar at Amtsgericht Mitte, 13.9.2025) where the procedural fairness of past trials is argued: The final opportunity for the defendants to challenge the verdict; the only thing standing between them and their residency sentence to be served at \u201cThe Reflective Institution for Art Professionals\u201d \u2013 colloquially known as ArtJail<\/em>. 
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The law is a fragile performance, it relies on speech acts: swearing to tell the truth, telling a self-serving version of the truth, making up the truth along the way, surviving the holes being poked in our truth, trying to get to the truth at whatever cost. Corpus Iuris Artis<\/em> likewise relies on speech acts, both truthful and false; delivered in diverse spaces, both legal and artistic; presented in various forms, both live and recorded. Approaching the mechanisms and power dynamics within the art world in a satirical tone, Corpus Iuris Artis<\/em> addresses issues of accountability, complicity, and truthfulness. The word verdict comes from Latin verdictus: \u201cto speak the truth.\u201d Art professionals, through their work and self-fashioning, traffic in narratives. But what compels us to tell the truth? What consequences do we suffer for withholding or distorting it? We present ourselves as moral agents \u2013 but how well would our stories hold up if we were really judged as such? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A reflection on the founding and functioning of institutions, Jacques Derrida\u2019s Declarations of Independence<\/em> (1976) begins with the sentence \u201cIt is better that you know right away: I am not going to keep my promise.\u201d Likewise, the promises made here might not be kept. The performer\/representative offers herself up as merely the draftsman or secretary responsible for the task of drawing up and putting in writing what the art world knew it wanted to say. Do we create the law or does the law create us? The final verdict(us) is left to the audience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Selin Davasse\u2019s exhibition Corpus Iuris Artis: II. The Hearing<\/i> takes us to\nthe fictional \u201cCourt of Ethical Reckoning in the Arts\u201d \u2013 a makeshift stage for spectacle, a theater set. Nodding to the deeply performative nature of law, and the frail state of legal systems, this courtroom drama plays out within a house of cards that may collapse on itself at any moment. Behind the scenes, we witness the internal monologues, formative memories, clashing belief systems, trials and tribulations of a prosecutor in an intimate yet estranged video portrait. Charged with upholding the \u201cCodex Iuris Artis \u2013 Statutes for Speculative and Situated Ethics in the Art World\u201d, the prosecutor\u2019s task is not merely to enforce legal doctrines and professional ethical guidelines, but to embody them in all their contradictions and complicities. Part authority figure, part sacrificial scapegoat, she becomes a cipher for the art world\u2019s disciplinary fantasies and failures. Dieses \u201eStrafrecht\u201c f\u00fcr die Kunstwelt legt Verst\u00f6\u00dfe unterschiedlichen Umfangs und Schweregrads sowie m\u00f6gliche Verteidigungsstrategien dar. Auf humorvolle und selbstkritische Weise n\u00e4hert sich das Projekt den Mechanismen und Machtverh\u00e4ltnissen innerhalb der Kunstwelt und thematisiert Fragen der sozialen Verantwortung, Rechenschaft und (Selbst-)Zensur \u2013 wobei es zugleich auf den performativen Charakter und die Fragilit\u00e4t von Rechtssystemen verweist.
