Spooning in 4 Acts: Born with a silver spoon<\/em> was the title of the annual soft power<\/em>-membership assembly in February 2025, an event created by Hannah Lilith Kuhlmann and Susan Abu Baker, which revolved around the spoon \u2013 as a tool, an object and a symbol. On this evening, each member chose a spoon (or the spoon chose them) at the start of a journey through four acts and six courses envisioned by Susan Abu Baker (food) and Hannah Lilith Kuhlmann (objects).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The spoon is considered the oldest and simplest eating utensil. It is closely associated with the act of feeding and being fed and is often symbolic of tenderness and love (think: \u201cSpooning\u201d); a symbol of protection and the passing on of life. It also represents the care of others and the sharing of resources. In many cultures, sharing a spoon is a sign of connection or hospitality; symbolising a sense of community: \u201cTo stir with the same spoon\u201d means working for a common cause and being accomplices \u2013 an inspirational idiom for the membership model of soft power<\/em>. Meanwhile, the idiom \u201cNo spoon big enough to stir that pot\u201d is used to describe a situation or a problem that is so complicated or messy that it cannot be solved; evoking the feeling of frustration and powerlessness in the context of the current political situation and manifold global and local crises. We believe independent art spaces are indispensable in the face of these current societal challenges. Probably we are not big enough to stir the whole pot, but that\u2019s why there need to be many of us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With the title Born with a silver spoon<\/em> , soft power<\/em> continues to use the occasion of the annual members\u2019 meeting to make playful references to \u2013 and to dissociate ourselves from \u2013 the very bourgeois history of the \u201cKunstverein\u201d as an institutional model and instead focus on its potential to act as a forum for self-organisation and the democratisation of contemporary cultural production. Collectively we aim to define the Kunstverein as a public space in which an active, self-organised and critical engagement with contemporary art and the conditions of its production, reception and ownership can take place.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"

Kunstvereine positionieren sich dabei \u2013 in privater Tr\u00e4gerschaft, oft zumindest teilweise finanziert durch ihre Mitglieder \u2013 gerne als relativ autonom von (kultur)politischen oder wirtschaftlichen Interessen, und damit in Abgrenzung zu \u00f6ffentlichen Institutionen oder Kunstmarkt. Als kollektive Sammlung anonymisiert, offenbart die Private Collection<\/em> individuelle, rationale wie sentimentale, oft liebevolle und manchmal komplizierte Beziehungen zu Kunst und ihrem (Markt)Wert. Das gemeinsame Essen ist eines der \u00e4ltesten Gemeinschaftsrituale, das mit Selbsterhaltung, Ernte und Dankbarkeit verbunden ist. Die von Irene Fern\u00e1ndez Arcas, Nadav Naim Kirsh, Ayscha Zarina Omar und Alina Lehle choreografierte Performance Seasons of spirit *Sensorial rite experience*<\/em> betrachtete das gemeinsame Essen als soziale Skulptur. Als Jahresgabe f\u00fcr Unterst\u00fctzer*innen des gemeinn\u00fctzigen Kunstvereins wurden die Mitglieder von soft power<\/em> eingeladen, Teil dieser kollektiven Performance zu werden, indem sie die Idee eines Abendessens als K\u00f6rper in Interaktion mit den vorgeschlagenen sieben Sinnen und Jahreszeiten erlebten. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

F\u00fcr das Projekt wurde ein Sieben-G\u00e4nge-Men\u00fc kreiert und in einer tempor\u00e4ren Zeltstruktur choreografiert, bestehend aus Zeichnungen auf Stoff von Irene Fern\u00e1ndez Arcas sowie Objekten und Skulpturen der eingeladenen K\u00fcnstlerin Dora Durkesac.
