For No mixed feelings: spiral downwards joy Saverio Cantoni, Dalia Maini aka DMT and Stefano “Menion” Ferrari form an ensemble of devices, sensibilities, and political consciousness shaped in dissonant frequencies and sonic fabulation, joined by Dana Cermane interpreting in sign language the spoken words and sonic improvisation. Weaving personal experiences and lived reality, transforming grief into joy through noise, No mixed feelings: spiral downwards joy invites the audience to collectively mourn the debilitation of a liveable world. The collaborative performance caters to the relationship between territory, politics, and poetry in a shape-shifting aural experience; transitory like improvisational sounding environments, and transtemporal like nocturnal storytelling.
With this project, Saverio Cantoni, Dalia Maini aka DMT and Stefano “Menion” Ferrari expand on their collaboration in the framework of Saverio Cantoni’s installation Time is out of joint co-produced by Villa Romana and soft power and presented at Villa Romana in September 2024 in the framework of Saverio’s participation in the Testing Grounds residency programme in Florence. A recording of the live performance at soft power will be broadcast in the context of the radio project Mixed Feelings 2 – Still with Mixed Feelings on Refuge Worldwide.
The performance at soft power is conceived through aesthetics of access, where the sound is not only to be listened to, but also becomes a visual description offered as an integral part of the event. Spoken words (in English) will be live subtitled and screened along with captions to the sound and spectral visualizer. A simultaneous interpretation in sign language (DGS) will be curated by Dana Cermane. As some sounds may be harsh and loud, hearing plugs (as well as air balloons) will be available at the bar, and there is the possibility to move to a quieter area outside of the space. The artists aim for a relaxed performance environment where the audience is free to come as they are and enjoy as they wish, moving around, leaving at any time, being loud or quiet.
